By Dennis Cook

Poor people found everywhere around the world. The Hawaii state is home to a huge number of such individuals. In order to improve the lives of these citizens, local authorities have encouraged firms to donate to homeless in Maui. Communities can take the necessary steps to building a more inclusive society by alleviating such inequalities.

There has been an ongoing crisis where the number of people who are homeless has been on the rise. Research has shown that it is the state with the highest population of these individuals in the country. Much of the people here live together in congested shelters. The fact the area is an island means that the cost of shipping translates to locals paying a premium even for essential commodities.

The political situation in the country is also partly to blame for the change in fortunes of the native people. The strict settling patterns stipulated by the law have further aggravated the housing situation. As a result, hotels, restaurants and private property owners have had to deal with constant invasion of their privacy by the homeless.

There are a number of issues affecting persons in this state. The congestion exposes them to unhygienic conditions that could lead to disease outbreaks. It also creates social tension in the population as those with good shelter despise the homeless and vice versa. This growing tension further stresses the need for donor organizations to intervene to and provide assistance in any way the can.

Charitable organizations in this region are mainly set up by local companies. Civil rights organizations as well as citizens. They provide the under privileged members with basic goods to make their lives bearable. They do this to fulfill the constitutional requirement where each citizen has a right to a decent livelihood.

There are various ways in which on can assist the under privileged. Once is by providing materials to ensure they build more permanent homes. Blankets, sheets and tents serve as temporary solutions before a more solid alternative is found. Also on the agenda is to shift those who have invaded private land to eliminate conflict between the two parties. This entails identifying a suitable relocation area then transferring the instruments of land ownership to the homeless.

Due to congestion in the few shelters, disease outbreak is much more common. Charity organizations have come together to provide basic medication to curtail the spread of communicable diseases. The organizations have set up dispensaries where children from homeless families can get treatment at no cost. Rehabilitation centres have been set up to assist the large number of drug addicts in the region.

Mal nourishment due to inadequate access to the minimum calorie intake is a major problem affecting shelter less people. The lack of professional skills translates to a high level of unemployment. Most persons get by with less than one meal a day. Organizes groups do provide food aid to the needy populations to help them address the hunger situation. Research is currently being undertaken to identify other items to donate to homeless.
