Electric Motor Rewinding Can Be A Rewarding Home Task

By Philip Collins

One can hardly imagine a world without electrical motors. They make air conditioners possible, they circulate the water in a swimming pool and they power vacuum cleaners. The list of uses for these devices are endless. Most people will be surprised if they take the trouble to count the number they have in and around their homes. They can be expensive to replace or repair, however. Luckily, DIY enthusiasts in Phoenix can consider electric motor rewinding themselves.

This type of project may not be suitable for beginners. Winding requires skill and there are many pitfalls. It is also necessary to understand that such a project requires a very high level of exactness. There is no room for mistakes. Anyone not sure of their ability to tackle this type of job should rather make use of professionals instead of following step by step instructions that may not be suitable for the particular device.

First, it is necessary to remove the housing in order to expose the armature, stator and windings. Experienced professional advise that detailed photographs be taken at this stage. When winding, the exact patterns and connections will have to be recreated and the photographs can be a big help in this regard. Even small mistakes can render the project a failure.

The next step is to take the wire from the brush pads, taking care not to disturb the tabs more than strictly necessary. The wire must be completely removed. Thereafter the coils can be cut in order to free them from the armature or stator. It is very important to count the number of winds in every coil because it will have to be rewound in exactly the same manner for the device to work.

The insulation lining the stator should be inspected very carefully. Damaged insulation should be replaced with insulation tape or an the same material that was previously used. Hereafter the armature or stator can be rewound. It is vital to recreate the exact same winding patterns and the exact same number of coils as the original. Also, the same type of magnet wire and of the same gauge should be used.

The end of the first winding should be left apart and it must be long enough to reach the first of the tabs. The final winding will also be connected at that specific point. The wire can be held in place with a crimping tool. Care should be taken, however, to make sure that the wire makes decent contact with the tab. If necessary, some of the insulating material can be taken out.

Next, the end of the last winding and the loose wire from the first winding can be connected. After making sure that no wire connected to the tabs are touching. Thereafter it is simply a matter of assembling the housing again and to test the device. If it is not performing as expected it is best to ask a professional to examine the work done.

When working on electrical projects safety should always be the highest priority. Children should not be allowed to participate in such projects. The working area should be clean and dry and when the end result is tested, precautions should be taken against potential mishaps.
