Addiction comes in many forms and the most popular of these is illegal drugs. The continued use of addicting substances such as these might result the responsibilities you have like your job, your health and relationship with other people. Change of behavior of an addicted person may not be noticeable to them but it causes problems to him and the people around him.

Most of the victims of drug abuse are children who are lured into using one by their friends because of peer pressure. Parents should help in educating their children about the side effects of these activities to their body and mind. Here are some things that parents can teach to their children.

Learn to say no to your friends and do not be afraid to do so. Kids are afraid to say no to people because they do not want to receive a negative reaction from them. If they tell you everyone is doing it, that is a lie. Make your own decisions and never allow someone to pressure you in doing what is not right.

Choose your friends carefully and avoid those kids who drink alcohol and take illegal drugs. You can get along with them without needing to do the things they are doing. Avoid negative peer pressure by getting involved with community and school activities instead. Do things you love doing, for example sports, arts or music.

Have connections with your parents and other adults to be able to talk with them regarding your life and also rely on them. Talk about anything to them which includes your decisions regarding the use of alcohol and drugs. They could give you advice based on experiences they have had on these issues. Gaining their trust is important so you would be given their confidence in making your own decisions.

Be informed on the negative effects of alcohol and drug abuse may bring to your body and the relationship you have with the people around you. There are some misconceptions about them being shared around so learn which one is true or not. Share these information you found and be a positive role model for your friends.

Plan ahead and be prepared in going out with friends somewhere like party. Have a person you could call on any time you need help. By having some to call, you will be able to ask for help whenever someone will be pressuring you to do something you have no interest in doing and prevent you to become a victim of a person and his substance abuse.

If you or your friends are already involved with substance abuse, do not hesitate to get help immediately. Many organizations are willing to help you rehabilitate and get rid of the addiction you have. There is no need to face these problems alone.
