Information Regarding Thermal Transfer Ribbon

By Diane Howard

The transfer of information became much faster and simpler with the invention of printers. Numerous kinds of printers applied in printing on various forms of media exist currently. To achieve their goal, various technologies are applied in different kinds of printers. The thermal transfer printer is one vital kind of printer. For production of images on different materials, the working of this printer depends on the application of heat on wax, wax-resin, or resin thermal transfer ribbon.

Normally, heat is applied by the thermal print head. This in turn liquefies wax or resin on to the paper or label surface. The effect is the creation of the desired image. In existence are a number of ribbon types and all have varying features. This makes them ideal for a number of applications. Knowing the features of a number of ribbon types prior to selecting one for use is critical.

The first type of ribbons is the resin-enhance wax ribbons. This one is also referred to as the full wax and is usually coated with wax-based ink. This usually makes it to melt at a low temperature. Given its qualities, it is the most common type and it finds a lot of use on coated and uncoated paper stock. The durability of the image produced is much lower. Full wax ribbons are also very cheap and can be bought easily from retail stores, malls, and home depots among many other places.

Wax-resin ribbons are the next categories of ribbons and are a hybrid of resin-based resins and wax. Their melting temperature is moderate. They produce clear and sharp images. One can produce the images on diverse materials. These products have been tested and researched to confirm their abilities.

Wax resin ribbons are ideal for printing both standard thermal transfer and waterproof labels. The images are sufficiently resistant against temperature and moisture variations, and occasional rough handling. The cost of these ribbons is moderate and are ideal for labels for shelves, barcode, shipping and pharmaceutical prescription.

Full resin ribbons are made using pure resin. Their melting temperatures are much higher. When they melt, they dissolve into the material on which they are being printed. This results into an extremely durable finish. Since the quality of the final product is usually very high, one must ensure that the situation calls for use of this material. Otherwise, it would be an unnecessary overkill and waste of resources.

Among the three kinds of ribbons, full resin ribbons cost the most and are the most durable. They are suitable for use non-paper applications including synthetic stocks. This is due to their durability. They are suitable for use on textile or garment labels, automotive labels, flexible packaging, and very sensitive chemicals and medical.

Generally, one can easily get all the three ribbon types in a single store. Furthermore, there are online stores that major in availing these commodities to the global market to make it easy to access them. Online stores can ship these items to any destination all over the world after they have been bought.
