Key Points On Oilfield Grounding

By Pamela Hill

Earthing has always been a major concern in gasoline companies. This is due to the activities involved in dealing with gasoline products such as transportation and processing and treatment of those goods. Most companies are conducting oilfield grounding as a way of preventing perilous damages caused by static electrical power. The process of earthing entails connection of electric equipment to the earth or another body that serves alternatively for the earth.

The purpose of earthing is to control every static build up hence stopping all inert emancipation, instead of attempting to get rid of static electricity in general. Inert electric charges are produced when the gasoline moves up and make contact with other substances. If the accumulation of static is sufficient, it causes a build-up of a spark in the presence of a combustible vapor mixture which may cause ignition. Hence, the oilfield firm is supposed to connect one or more conductive electric cables to the ground so that it absorbs the charges.

This process can apply to all immobile mass luggage compartment facilities on railway properties or areas bordering prime railway paths. These are mostly the ones which are serviced by rail path where treacherous goods, which have prime or auxiliary cataloging, are laden or unpacked. Earthing is applicable to all new fittings and for substitution on accessible equipment.

Additionally, the gasoline-producing company may conduct both temporary and permanent earthing. The former is used to insulate piping structures and highway rolling supplies. This is done by fitting them with pull off connectors which gives them electrical contact with the highway shipment tank. It is a good way of preventing ignition that might crop up during the transportation of gasoline products.

Earthing can be physically applied during the process of packing and unpacking fluid samples in containers. In addition, employees can build up inert charges in their bodies hence it is necessary to get rid of them in a thought-out manner. This is done before the employees get in the production buildings. Thus, companies need to engage in earthing to assure safety for employees.

Additionally, there are some requirements that a company needs to follow when conducting earthing. They include installing earthing conductors in a way that they are not subject to mechanical damage. They are also required to do impermanent earthing on all highway consignment tanks and rolling stock before the dome and loading valves are opened. They should remain in position till the transfer is complete and the regulators are closed and safe.

Additionally, there is a need for inspection of the earthing projects in gasoline companies. These inspections are conducted by communication and signal companies and also maintenance and associations. They are the ones who certify that the oilfields are safe for workers. If the firm does not comply, there are some legal consequences it may encounter. This includes the closure of the company until it meets the terms stipulated by the law.

The grounding process is very important for every company that deals with oil products. It is a field that requires a lot of expertise hence a company should be careful to follow the earthing procedure keenly. It is mandatory for all companies to conduct it so as to ensure the safety of its employees and avoid precarious damages that may be caused by ignition.
