Finding A Gopher Trap That Works For You

By Paul Bennett

The most common variety of these types of tools are the wire traps. They have the appearance of some kind of puzzle game, although perhaps a bit more threatening looking. There have been many variations of this kind of device over the years, but the original version called the Macabee is still the most popular type of gopher trap.

There are plenty of people who prefer to use box traps when they're trying to catch anything from gophers, moles, rats, to squirrels. These can either be made of wood or plastic. The way this particular device works is by using a wire bar that is spring loaded, which causes the animal to be tightly squeezed.

Many people like to use the black hole device. It is very similar to box traps, except for the fact that it is shaped like a cylinder. In that way, it is able to more effectively trick the rodent.

Knowing where to place the device is the first step in getting everything to work the right way. It might take some research and the use of other resources in order to learn where in the system of tunnels the traps can be placed for optimum results. By finding out how to do it right, less time and money can be spent on this endeavor, with more time to enjoy a pest-free property.

Macabee traps have been around for over a hundred years. The main difference between the modern designs is that they are now made out of stronger wire. People like this option because it fits nicely into the tunnel, and can close very quickly and powerfully.

The way that wire traps like these are able to work so well is from the way gophers tend to push dirt in front of themselves. In that way the, animal does not notice the trap right in front of them. By the time the rodent and has noticed the metal prongs, it is too late to burrow out, and it is quickly and humanely killed.

An important thing to keep in mind before starting this pest control endeavor is that it is not the easiest thing in the world to get one of these traps set up properly. It might take a little skill and a lot of patience to get the device set and placed in just the right way. Simply by looking up instructional videos and receiving the advice from more experienced trappers, a lot of the headache can be avoided.

Some people might have a hard time dealing with the fact that most, if not all, methods of trapping involve killing the animal. It can be a comfort to know that this is unavoidable when trying to control the population of these pests. Because of how fast their metabolism is, trying to relocate them to somewhere they can be less harmful to the environment and disruptive to the people who live there will cause them to die of thirst or starvation, which is much less humane than killing them quickly.
