The Essence Of Unreinforced Masonry Buildings Seismic Retrofit

By Gregory McDonald

The calamity that most people are scared of is the one that nobody, not even the scientists, can predict of happening. An earthquake is the calamity that will destroy the homes of families, destroy businesses, but the worst that can happen is that people will have to lose one of their loved ones. However, the essence of Unreinforced masonry buildings seismic retrofit is to ensure that passersby or people who are staying in these buildings will have enough time to evacuate the buildings when there is seismic activity.

Today, many countries have experienced the strike of earthquakes. Sadly, scientists and seismologists are still having trouble to accurately predict it of happening. That is why a lot of countries are putting up laws for them to ensure that when it does happen, there would only be a few victims and few buildings to repair.

It takes a lot of money to rebuild edifices that it made the government money dwindle. Moreover, there is also the rebuilding of highways without delays in order for individuals to go back to what was before, and this has propelled leaders to in order for every citizen to have the life before the tragedy.

These buildings were built prior 1933 when there were still no laws from the government of how structures should be built. Also, during that time, there were still no available materials that will make them earthquake resistant. People were just constructing them without a design that will make their creations ready for calamities.

Now, you wonder why individuals cannot just have the building demolished. It has not been demolished due to it having historical and cultural value. Furthermore, the individuals who have ownership of the structures still cannot let go of the structures since it embodies the perseverance of their forefathers to construct the structures.

What made this structure susceptible to damages is the mortar used by the builders to create it. Moreover, the walls are lacking steel reinforcement. The roofing and flooring are not fastened to the exterior walls of the structure. These variables are the reasons why people are anxious, for when tragedy occurs, the building will fall.

In a seismic retrofit, many additions will be applied in order to fully transform the buildings into ones that can handle the strike of an earthquake. Structural attachment will then be installed that will attach the walls, roof and floor to make the structure more intact. Foundations will be made more durable or maybe installing another foundation maybe required.

Even though there are a lot of technological advancements today, still scientists cannot truly understand how the world works. However, what they can only do is to provide the knowledge they have gotten for human beings to be ready. One of the technological advancements that will help people in getting the needed knowledge is the internet.

Moreover, users can find corporations that allow people to have their structure retrofitted. Comparing the prices can also be done using the internet for them to experience savings. Additionally, they can have an overview of the corporation by through reading responses from other clients.
