A vessel that is designed for the purpose of carrying cargo is referred to as a barge. The fact that these boats or vessels are not independent makes them special. The boats are dependent on other sources of power to move because they do not have the capacity to propel themselves in the water. A wide range of other vessels like power boats and ships can be used to tow these vessels. Barges were used in smaller water bodies like rivers, lakes, and canals. However, this is not the same these days because they are extensively used at sea ports today.

A typical barge has a flat bottom like that of a raft. The flat bottom is incorporate into the design intentionally for two main reasons. The first reason is to give the vessel more capacity to carry cargo while the second reason is to allow it to haul more bulky cargo. Thus, these vessels are meant to move very large amounts of bulky cargos from one point of the water body to another.

The existence of barges is not a recent occurrence. These vessels were in use long before the Industrial Revolution happened. Before the Industrial Revolution happened in Europe, barges were used to transport cargo across two land masses that were connected to each other by a small body of water. After the occurrence of the Industrial Revolution, the demand of barges started to decline.

Barges were not an appropriate means or transportation anymore since they did not have the required speed when compared to latest transport/propulsion means. The newer transport/propulsion means like steam engines and trains were more effective and were able to achieve more speed. Therefore, there adoption increased while the demand for barges began decreasing gradually.

The vessels were still being produced and used in as much as their usage was gradually going down. Modern barges are actually more effective and better and this makes them to remain useful in the modern transport system. The various modern types of barges are classified into different kinds. Examples are barracks barge, dry bulk cargo barge, car-float barge and barge for carrying liquid cargo.

Barracks barge is alternatively referred to as a houseboat. It is used more for residential purposes where people live in them as floating houses in rivers and lakes. Dry bulk cargo is used for ferrying dry cargo. Some of the cargo is cab be used to ferry include sand, food grains, and minerals like coal and steel.

An exact opposite of the dry cargo barge is the liquid barge. This is so because their purpose is to transport liquid products such as fertilizers and petrochemicals. The types of barges mentioned in this article are just but a few examples of all barge types. For example, the power barge can be used as a mobile power plant. Another kind is the royal barge. This kind exists in states that have monarchs. An example is the UK.
