The ANSI issues two sets of standards within this industry. The first standard deals with how healthy waters are while the second standard is concerned with aesthetics of waters. The first standard ensures the removal of specific contaminants in waters before they can be considered safe for drinking. The second standard is all about the aesthetics of the waters, which include appearance and taste among other properties. Either one or both standards are specified in certification.

The activity of filtering water finds use in many different applications. For instance, humanitarian emergencies, aid organizations use them heavily to supply portable waters to victims of the crises. Military operations are also sometimes carried out in places where it may be hard to find portable water. As such, military personnel bring with them military-grade filters for such purposes.

Hikers also use filters heavily to make waters portable. The work of filters is to remove disease-causing microorganisms such as protozoa, microbial cysts, and bacteria.
