Understanding TSA Rules At American Airports

By Mary Russell

While security screenings can often be stressful, it is essential for the safety and security of air travelers. As such, TSA rules are in place which apply to all travelers. Although, those whom have gone through these screenings on a regular basis can often qualify for "trusted traveler, " status. The "trusted traveler" program allows individuals whom frequently travel between the same locations a separate screening area.

The organization itself has evolved from a once one size fits all security approach to a more risk based one. The current agency and policies are now driven by intelligence and strategy planning rather than past and current events. By taking this stance, the agency is allowed to provide expeditious check-in and travel arrangement for certain travelers.

The number of type of items allowed can often change on a daily basis and airport to airport. In order to create a more enjoyable and expeditious experience at check-in and security, it is often good to call or check the TSA website for updates. Otherwise, what was allowed before may no longer be allowed. Whereas, there are often times when banned items are removed from the list and once again allowed on a flight.

The process also allows for tougher screenings when working with known criminals or those traveling to and from regions prone to terrorists and terrorism. When it comes to the latter, screenings are often more intense for those traveling to and from these regions on a regular basis. As such, these individuals may want to apply for "trusted traveler" status when and where appropriate.

As part of the security process, agents often use a number of different methods to assure identities match the name on traveling documents. If not, then the individual must have the ticket changed so that it matches the name on the document. Otherwise, anyone could travel as someone else, thus providing a greater level of risk to the airport, business owners, guests and travelers.

One reason for these new tougher screenings is not only that the world has been inundated with terrorist attacks recently but also because airports are busier than ever. As such, there is also a threat to passengers when it comes to attack and theft on a personal level.

Customs and TSA are often the two most disrespected groups working at airports. While this is the case, travelers need to remember that the job of the Transportation Security Administration is keep the traveling public safe. Whereas, the customs agents are required to examine import and exports to other countries to assure the items are allowed. As such, these agents often help a number of travelers avoid arrest and detainment whether at departure or arrival.

Ultimately, the safety of all people is the responsibility of many different factions. These include, anyone reporting seeing something out of the ordinary to the nearest agent, while also not profiling based on personal identities. Sometimes this can be a very thin line, in these instances it is always better to be safe and have an official check than otherwise.
