Facts One Should Know About A Mole Trap

By Ann Davis

Moles refer to small animals which live in underground tunnels that they dig using their front limbs so as to reach food sources. Their diet is made up of insects mainly. There burrowing skills makes them to live in seclusion underground. They may come out of the ground to the surface at times but only to breed before going back into seclusion. Moles spend most of their lifetime underground, which makes them to have very few predators. Thus, use of mole trap is the best way to control their populations

They feed on insects such as beetles and worms. These insects live in the soil so moles have to cover a large area when looking for them. They also have to consume a lot of food in order for them to get a lot of energy to burrow the land. In most cases they prefer loose moist soil that provides perfect ground for worms.

In some countries, moles are considered as agricultural pests, especially by farmers. They are often caught and killed. Nevertheless, farmers in other countries need permission before killing them. Farmers therefore need to find methods they can use to catch moles and move them to different places instead of killing them. Farmers also control population of moles by using mole snares.

A mole snare is a tool created to catch moles. It is a most practical and successful way of controlling moles. The device is simple and caution needs to be undertaken in setting of the trap so as to prevent accidents that might kill the mole. Killing moles is inhumane and punishable in most countries.

One needs to consider a place which has evidence of moles to lay traps. This is done before setting up a trap. Trapping may sometimes not be successful because some channels may have been abandoned by the moles long ago. A depressed portion is the best place of setting traps. This is because as the mole moves, it will push the trap upwards hence triggering it.

The trap is in most case laid at night since that is when mole activity is highest.. There are several different types of snares. The most vital factor to consider when making a purchase is to make sure that it is safe and will not kill the mole. One should also exercise utmost caution as they set up the trap so that they do not hurt themselves.

Moles contaminate soil, which makes it to have a bad smell that is unsuitable for farm animals to consume. Their burrowing activities also cover animal pastures, which reduces the amount of pasture available. This affects animals and small plants a lot hence causing losses to farmers. The animals also damage farm machinery by exposing stones.

There are several ways one can use to control moles other than trapping. An example is by practicing live trapping. Examining of fresh mole channels is done very early in the morning or at night. An individual then uses a spade to strike the animals when movement is observed in the soil. Flooding of the channels is also another away of driving moles away.
